Report: Dolphins host Brandon Spikes for free-agent workout
Brandon Spikes is reportedly getting another shot to continue his NFL career.
The Miami Dolphins hosted the free-agent linebacker for a workout Wednesday, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Miami is the first team known to be interested in Spikes since a hit-and-run incident led to his release from the New England Patriots, and earned him a four-game suspension, ahead of the 2015 season.
If signed, the veteran will provide some much-needed depth and competition at what remains a position of relative concern for the Dolphins. His proven ability against the run, in particular, could be of value to a Miami defense ranked 28th in the ground game last season.
Spikes spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Patriots before moving on to join the Buffalo Bills for one season in 2014. His return to New England the following offseason was short-lived, as the charges led to the team parting ways after less than a month.
