Report: Saints, Brees expected to agree on extension Wednesday

Chuck Cook / USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees are expected to reach an agreement on a contract extension by the end of the day Wednesday, ESPN's Ed Werder reports.

Werder adds that the extension for the 37-year-old quarterback, who's entering the final season of his original deal, will likely be of the short-term variety.

The two sides have been discussing a contract for the majority of the offseason, both with the intention of securing Brees' future in New Orleans and lowering his astronomical $30-million salary-cap hit.

A nine-time Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer, Brees remains one of the NFL's elite signal-callers heading into his 16th season.

Yet another strong season from Brees last year - in which he finished with 4,870 yards and 32 touchdowns - should give the Saints confidence he'll continue to be productive for several years to come.
