Report: Fitzpatrick not in danger of losing starting gig
For better or for worse, the New York Jets are standing by Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Despite a particularly disastrous two-game stretch in which he threw nine interceptions, the veteran signal-caller isn't in danger of losing his starting job, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday on "NFL Insiders."
The Jets' resistance to making a change is partly due to the lack of viable options elsewhere on the quarterback depth chart, Schefter added.
New York spent the offseason desperately trying to get Fitzpatrick back in the fold, but with his turnover issues directly contributing to consecutive disappointing losses, the Jets can only wait it out so long.
If the 33-year-old continues to struggle, someone would have to get bumped into a starting role eventually, whether it's Geno Smith - who was set to start last year before a training-camp altercation left him with a broken jaw - or second-year quarterback Bryce Petty.
Fitzpatrick and the rest of the Jets' offense will look to get on track in a road matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday afternoon.
