Sammy Watkins has a new running mate.

The Buffalo Bills traded up early in the second round to address their most glaring need on the offensive side of the ball, selecting wide receiver Zay Jones out of East Carolina with the 37th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Buffalo acquired the selection from the Los Angeles Rams, along with a fifth-rounder (No. 149), in exchange for their second-round pick (No. 44) and a third-round pick (No. 91).

A dynamic athlete who produced at an insanely high level in college, Jones should be quick to challenge for a starting spot in the Bills' offense.

Finally getting Tyrod Taylor a second weapon in the passing game will go a long way toward helping Buffalo make the most of their decision to make a commitment to the quarterback earlier this offseason.

Zay Jones Bio

Position: WR
School: East Carolina
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-2
Weight: 201 lbs

Strengths

  • Huge numbers in senior season. Posted 158 catches and became NCAA Division I all-time leader in receptions.
  • Works back to the quarterback well on comebacks routes and gives passer a clear target to throw the football.
  • Good hands. Brings in balls over the middle in traffic on crossing routes.
  • Lines up all over the field. East Carolina used him out wide, in the slot, and even out of the backfield on occasion.

Weaknesses

  • Needs to add bulk to his frame. Could struggle to get clean releases at the next level.
  • Not an overly aggressive run blocker.
  • Much of his production came from short and underneath routes. Not a true deep threat.
