How's this for a Friday news dump?

In a shocking move to part ways with one of their top offensive playmakers, the Kansas City Chiefs have released veteran wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.

"I'd like to thank Jeremy for his effort and dedication the past two seasons," general manager John Dorsey said in a statement. "I have great respect for all players, which makes decisions like these very difficult, but we felt it was in the best interest of our club moving forward to part ways at this time. We wish Jeremy the best as he continues his career."

Maclin's surprise departure comes just two seasons after he landed in Kansas City on a five-year, $55-million deal as a free agent in 2015.

The Chiefs will save $10 million against this year's salary cap by cutting ties, and injury issues limited Maclin to 536 yards and two touchdowns across 12 games last season, so there's certainly justification for the move.

But the 29-year-old was still far and away the top player in a thin group of receivers looking ahead to 2017. That spot on the roster will now face even more questions heading into training camp, where Chris Conley, Tyreek Hill, Albert Wilson, and fourth-round rookie Jehu Chesson will be among those competing for primary roles.

Maclin has instantly become the top name on the free-agent market, and he'll be certain to draw interest from a number of teams around the league.

Any receiver-needy clubs will be intrigued by the production he enjoyed during his debut season with the Chiefs, racking up 87 catches for 1,088 yards with eight touchdowns.
