Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey underwent surgery to treat a core muscle injury suffered during organized team activities on Thursday and is expected back by the beginning of the season, the team and player announced Friday.

Ramsey released a statement via the team's official website:

To all my supporters and fans, I want you to know that I chose to undergo surgery to treat a minor injury that was very successful. I want to and will be the best version of myself that I can be for the upcoming 2017 season.

I will attack this rehab, refine my body and work as hard as I ever have to become the best defensive back in this league and to make everyone, including my family, teammates and city, proud of who I am.

I can't wait to be back on the field with the team and show the world how we're rocking this year.

Ramsey had a standout season as a rookie, earning a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association's All-Rookie team. He did not miss a single contest as a rookie, making 65 tackles, 14 pass deflections, and two interceptions in 16 games.

He and newly signed cornerback A.J. Bouye are expected to be key players in the Jaguars' defense this season.
