Goodell to retire when contract ends in 2024

The recent five-year extension signed by Roger Goodell will be his last contract, as the NFL commissioner will retire at the conclusion of the deal in 2024.

NFL spokesperson Joe Lockhart, who confirmed the news to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, said Goodell will spend time helping to identify his successor before he departs.

The 58-year-old signed the five-year extension last week, which could be worth as much as $40 million annually should he meet all of the deal's incentives.

He has been in the position since 2006, replacing Paul Tagliabue after years serving as the league's chief operating officer.
