The NFL and NFLPA announced that 10 different helmet models will be prohibited from being worn by players following the results of laboratory testing.

Previously, players could choose any helmet they wanted to wear that passed National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment certification standards. The helmets that are now being prohibited, after performing poorly in lab testing, have either been discontinued by the manufacturer or were produced by companies no longer making the helmets.

Six different models have been banned immediately while the other four may be worn by players who used them in 2017, but cannot be worn by any new players.

The testing was conducted in Ottawa with a team of biomechanical engineering consultants selected by the NFL and NFLPA.
