Telvin Smith arrested for unlawful sexual activity with certain minors
Former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith was arrested Wednesday and charged with unlawful sexual activity with certain minors, according to jail records.
Smith allegedly had sex with a 17-year-old girl multiple times, in his vehicle and at his home, between August and September of 2019, a law enforcement source told ESPN's Michael DiRocco. Investigators reportedly found evidence in Smith's car that linked him to the girl.
"The Jaguars are aware of the report involving former linebacker Telvin Smith," the team said in a statement obtained by Action News Jax. "The club is unable to comment further on this ongoing investigation."
Smith had his bond set at $50,003.
SWAT team officers and undercover detectives were spotted at Smith's house in Jacksonville before he was taken into custody, according to WJXT's Vic Micolucci.
In Florida, unlawful sexual activity with certain minors is a second-degree felony. It applies to any person over the age of 23 who engages in sexual activity with a 16-year-old or 17-year-old.
Smith walked away from the NFL before the 2019 season, though he didn't say he was retiring. He was a Pro Bowler in 2017 and helped the Jaguars reach the AFC Championship Game the next year. He had over 100 tackles in all five seasons he played for Jacksonville.
