New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey is optimistic about new quarterback Justin Fields leading the team in 2025.

"We believe Justin is the starter," Mougey said Sunday, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "We believe in Justin. We believe we can win with Justin, so we're excited."

The 2021 first-round pick signed a two-year, $40-million contract with the Jets this offseason, joining his third team in as many seasons.

Fields, 26, proved his rushing ability after amassing 1,143 yards on the ground in 2022 as a member of the Chicago Bears. However, he's shown limitations in the passing game, posting an 83.9 passer rating in 44 NFL starts. He was the Pittsburgh Steelers' QB1 to begin the 2024 season but finished the campaign as the backup behind Russell Wilson.

"You saw it last year," Mougey added. "He was 4-2 as the starter and probably had some of the best quarterback play of his career. We're going to do everything to support him when he gets here."

New Jets head coach Aaron Glenn also has high expectations for Fields.

"He has a quiet confidence about himself," Glenn told NFL Network's Judy Battista on Sunday. "He can really throw the deep ball really, really well. Obviously, his legs are something that's dynamic not just in college but the NFL as well. I just think he's ready to break out as a top-notch quarterback."

The Jets, who haven't made the playoffs since the 2010 season, are turning to Fields after moving on from Aaron Rodgers. A Jets quarterback hasn't passed for 4,000 yards in a season since Joe Namath did so in 1967.
