Giants' Jones using bye week to address fumbling issue
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has fumbled a league-leading 13 times this season, losing nine of them, and with his club coming off a bye in Week 11, the rookie signal-caller is using the extra practice time to find solutions.
Specifically, Jones said he's focused on holding the ball with two hands when he drops back, and on getting rid of it sooner.
"It's about being mindful of it and being aware in the pocket," he told reporters after Wednesday's practice, according to Newsday's Bob Glauber. "I think it's pretty fundamental in that holding the ball with two hands is going to be more secure than not."
Jones added that he doesn't consider the fumbling problem to be especially complicated.
"It's just getting the ball out on time and not holding onto it," the quarterback added. "I don't think it's necessarily a complex problem, but it's getting it out on time. I think I definitely need to work on it."
In part due to Jones' fumbles, the Giants are one of two NFL teams that have turned the ball over at least once in every game this season, along with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, Jones has also shown promising signs under center. Over the past three contests, the No. 6 pick of the 2019 draft has completed 65% of his passes with nine touchdowns and just one interception. Overall, he's thrown for 1,967 yards, 15 TDs, and eight picks through eight starts of his rookie campaign.
The 2-8 Giants will try to snap a six-game losing streak when they travel to face the Chicago Bears in Week 12.
