Report: Rams hiring O'Connell as OC, Staley as DC
The Los Angeles Rams have reportedly found their new offensive and defensive coordinators for 2020.
The Rams are finalizing a deal to bring former Washington Redskins OC Kevin O'Connell to their sidelines in the same role, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. L.A. is also hiring Denver Broncos outside linebackers coach Brandon Staley as their new DC, a source told Schefter.
Over the last two seasons, Rams head coach Sean McVay also served as the team's offensive coordinator.
O'Connell was the Redskins' quarterback's coach for two seasons (2017-18) and the club's offensive coordinator for a year (2019). He wasn't retained by Washington amid its coaching changes.
The Rams' defensive coordinator job was vacant after the franchise decided not to renew Wade Phillips' contract, ending his three-season tenure in L.A.
Staley was the Chicago Bears' outside linebackers coach for two seasons (2017-18) before he was hired by the Broncos in the same role in 2019.
The 9-7 Rams missed the playoffs for the first time under McVay's tenure last campaign. Los Angeles allowed 22.8 points and 339.6 yards per game in 2019, which ranked 17th and 13th in the NFL, respectively.
