Report: Texans, Tunsil discussed new deal as OT aims for $19M annually
The Houston Texans held preliminary discussions about a new deal with offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil's agent during this week's NFL Scouting Combine, according to the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson.
Tunsil is expected to aim for a contract averaging at least $19 million-$20 million per year, Wilson reports. That would make him the NFL's highest-paid offensive lineman.
The Philadelphia Eagles' Lane Johnson, who signed a four-year, $72-million pact in November, is currently the highest-paid offensive lineman with his deal that averages $18 million per season. There's one year left on Tunsil's current contract, and he's slated to be paid $10.35 million in 2020.
The 25-year-old started 14 games and made his first Pro Bowl in 2019.
The Texans landed the 2016 first-round pick in a blockbuster trade with the Miami Dolphins last August. Houston received Tunsil, wide receiver Kenny Stills, a fourth-round pick (2020), and a sixth-rounder (2021), while Miami was given two first-round selections (2020 and 2021) and a second-rounder (2021), along with offensive tackle Julien Davenport and cornerback Johnson Bademosi.
