The Miami Dolphins owned the NFL's worst running game last season, and the franchise apparently wants to address the issue by adding a former Pro Bowler to its backfield.

The Dolphins are expected to check in on running back Melvin Gordon, and Gordon would have some interest in joining Miami at the right price, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN reports, citing sources.

Miami could also pursue cheaper free-agent runners such as Carlos Hyde, Lamar Miller, or Jordan Howard, according to Wolfe.

After cutting multiple veterans earlier this week, including longtime safety Reshad Jones, the Dolphins have approximately $95 million in cap space, per Spotrac.

Gordon missed training camp last year in hopes of securing a long-term deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. He debuted in Week 5 of the 2019 regular season and received $5.6 million in base salary playing under his rookie contract fifth-year option.

The 26-year-old, who has made two Pro Bowl appearances (2016, 2018), amassed 612 rushing yards (3.8 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns in 12 games last season.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, posted an average of 72.2 rushing yards per game, which ranked last in the NFL. Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was the club's leading rusher with 243 yards.

Miami also leads the 2020 NFL Draft with 14 selections, including a league-high three first-rounders.
