The Chicago Bears have released tight end Trey Burton, the team announced Friday.
Burton's release will be a post-June 1 cut, according to Adam Jahns of The Athletic. That designation means the move opens up $2.8 million in cap space for the Bears, reports ESPN's Field Yates.
Burton underwent hip surgery this offseason and is expected to be ready for training camp, according to Schefter. The Bears still owe him $4 million in guaranteed money in 2020.
Burton arrived in Chicago as a free agent in March 2018, signing a four-year deal worth $32 million. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014 and helped them win their first Super Bowl two months before joining the Bears.
After amassing 569 yards and six touchdowns on 54 catches in his first season with Chicago, the 28-year-old battled a groin injury that sidelined him for eight games in 2019. He finished the campaign on injured reserve after amassing just 14 catches for 84 yards.
Chicago will likely rely on veteran Jimmy Graham as its No. 1 tight end in 2020 after signing him to a two-year, $16-million deal this offseason.
The Bears also agreed Friday to sign offensive tackle Jason Spriggs to a one-year deal.
