Report: Cowboys, Prescott engage in positive contract talks

The Dallas Cowboys and franchise-tagged quarterback Dak Prescott have spoken about a long-term deal in the last two weeks and the conversations were "very positive," a source told David Moore of the Dallas Morning News.

The Cowboys' latest offer is a five-year contract that would make Prescott the NFL's highest-paid player, reports Moore, who adds the new proposal exceeds the deal recently signed by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz in every respect.

In June 2019, Wentz signed a four-year extension worth $128 million with almost $108 million guaranteed. Seattle Seahawks signal-caller Russell Wilson is the league's highest annual earner at $35 million.

Dallas placed its exclusive tender on Prescott this offseason, which means he can't negotiate with another team. If the two parties don't agree to a long-term extension by July 15, the QB will earn $33 million on the one-year deal.

The 26-year-old reportedly turned down a new contract worth $33 million annually with $105 million guaranteed in March.

It was reported last week that Prescott won't participate in the Cowboys' virtual offseason program, which started Monday, without a long-term deal.

Prescott has earned $4.03 million over four years on his rookie deal since Dallas selected him in the fourth round in 2016. He posted an 8-8 record last season while producing career highs in yards (4,902) and touchdowns (30).
