Worker dies after falling from SoFi Stadium roof
An ironworker died after falling from the roof of SoFi Stadium on Friday and work at the construction site has temporarily stopped, a spokesperson for the contractor confirmed, according to ESPN's Lindsey Thiry.
A source said the worker fell at least 60 feet while working on the southeast corner of the roof, according to Nathan Fenno of the Los Angeles Times.
"This is an extremely sad day," the site's general contractor, Turner-AECOM Hunt, said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this extremely difficult time. We work extremely hard to prevent days like this and we have halted all construction activity."
There's also a coronavirus outbreak at the construction site. Seven workers tested positive in the last eight days, bringing the total number of known cases among workers at the stadium to 12, according to Fenno.
Construction on SoFi Stadium, located in Inglewood, California, started in November 2016. The project is currently estimated to cost $5 billion-$6 billion after being initially tagged at $2.6 billion. The arena will be the new home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.
A preseason game between the Rams and the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 14 is scheduled to be the first event at SoFi Stadium.
