Jets owner expects Darnold, Gase to bounce back from Week 1 'mess'

The New York Jets are still fully committed to quarterback Sam Darnold and head coach Adam Gase despite a disappointing 27-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.

Team owner Christopher Johnson acknowledged the Jets' performance was "a mess," according to the New York Post's Brian Costello, but he believes Darnold and Gase will find a way to right the ship.

"I have so much confidence in Sam," Johnson said Wednesday, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. "He's the best player I know at turning the page, the absolute best, and I think he'll turn the page on this last game. I think you'll see an extraordinary Sam."

Jets fans have yet to see a breakout year from the 2018 third overall pick, but Johnson thinks it's just a matter of time.

"I think we're going to see him turn out to be that quarterback we all expected," he said of Darnold, who completed 21 of 35 attempts for 215 yards and one touchdown against one interception.

The Bills significantly outgained the Jets in total yards (404-254) and first downs (31-15) in the season opener.

As for Gase, Johnson remains adamant that the embattled head coach is the right man to patrol New York's sideline.

"I think that he has a lot more in him as a head coach than some of our fans are giving him credit for," Johnson said. "I understand they want to see success. I think that they will."

"I think he can work with and develop quarterbacks. I do continue to think that he is a brilliant offensive mind, especially. He has my every confidence," Johnson added, according to Costello.

The Jets will try to bounce back in Week 2 when they host the San Francisco 49ers.
