49ers trade Kwon Alexander to Saints
The San Francisco 49ers are trading linebacker Kwon Alexander to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick and linebacker Kiko Alonso, the Saints confirmed Monday.
Alexander is in his second season with the 49ers after joining them on a four-year, $54-million deal in 2019. He played in just eight games last season after suffering a torn pectoral but returned in time to participate in San Francisco's playoff run.
The 26-year old has also missed time this year, sitting out the last three games due to an ankle injury.
The Saints are expected to pair the newly acquired linebacker with Demario Davis to bolster their defense.
Alexander is currently in his sixth pro campaign and has recorded 444 tackles since entering the NFL. Drafted in the fourth round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, he made the Pro Bowl as a member of the Buccaneers in 2017.
Alonso has not yet appeared in a game this season as he works his way back from a torn ACL.
The 29-year-old linebacker has 588 career tackles under his belt, while the move to San Francisco will mark the fourth trade of his NFL career:
Alonso is set to be a free agent in 2021, according to Spotrac.
