Jets' Gase: I haven't done enough to develop Darnold

New York Jets head coach Adam Gase says he hasn't done enough to help Sam Darnold reach the next level.

“We need to do things well around him, but at the same time, it’s on me to get him to play better than what he’s played. I haven’t done a good enough job," Gase said, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Gase, who previously served as Peyton Manning's offensive coordinator, noted he was brought to New York to develop the third-year quarterback, but the sideline boss hasn't met his end of the bargain.

"I came here to help him develop his career. ... We haven’t been able to do that," Gase added, according to The Athletic's Connor Hughes.

The young signal-caller addressed Gase's comments and shouldered the blame for his poor play.

"I take full responsibility for the way I’ve played. I haven’t played well enough," Darnold said. "We have great people in this organization. With that being said, everyone is going to take blame for certain parts of us not winning.”

Darnold has taken a major step backward in 2020, his second season under Gase. The 23-year-old has thrown just three touchdown passes to go along with eight interceptions. His 64.0 passer rating would also be a career-low.

Gase has failed to impress overall during his time in New York, posting a 7-20 record. The Jets also field the 32nd-ranked offense in terms of yardage after finishing last in 2019.

New York is the NFL's only winless team, putting the Jets in position to potentially hold the No. 1 pick in next year's draft. They've frequently been linked to Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
