Report: Eagles expected to retain Pederson for 2021 season
The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to bring back head coach Doug Pederson for the 2021 campaign, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Pederson is set to meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Tuesday to discuss plans for next season, which will include changes to Pederson's staff, Schefter adds. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is one member of the staff who will reportedly not return next year.
Pederson's job security has been a hot topic during Philadelphia's disappointing 4-10-1 season. The Eagles were hampered by inconsistent quarterback play from Carson Wentz to begin the year, leading to rookie passer Jalen Hurts taking over under center.
The bench boss has maintained his desire to return to Philadelphia throughout the process, pointing to injuries and inexperience throughout the roster as reasons for the lackluster campaign.
"I feel fully confident to be the head coach of the Eagles in 2021," Pederson said in an appearance Monday on SportsRadio 94WIP.
The Eagles won a Super Bowl under Pederson to conclude the 2017 campaign and came into this season on the heels of three consecutive postseason appearances.
While Philadelphia may have made a decision regarding its head coach, the club also faces concerns over the quarterback position. Hurts has played moderately well since taking over, while Wentz carries a $34.6-million cap hit and a $59.2-million dead-cap hit if cut next season, according to Spotrac.
