Report: Newton not expected to return to Patriots
Cam Newton's time with the New England Patriots is likely nearing its end.
Newton and the Patriots are expected to part ways this offseason, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on "Sunday NFL Countdown," according to NESN's Zack Cox.
The former MVP attempted to re-establish his value with New England after signing a one-year deal worth a modest $1.75 million last offseason. However, Newton has struggled to string together consistent showings this year.
The quarterback has thrown more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (5) while averaging the lowest passing yards per game of his career (172.5). But Newton has maintained his reputation as a rushing threat, tallying 12 touchdowns on the ground.
Newton reflected on his down year earlier this week, stating his only regret was not having more time to learn the Patriots' system. The COVID-19 pandemic eliminated a large portion of offseason training programs.
New England will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The team will head into the offseason with question marks at quarterback, wide receiver, and tight end.
