Report: Chargers' interview requests for HC job include Garrett, Bieniemy
The Los Angeles Chargers are looking for a new head coach, and New York Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is an early candidate for the job.
The Chargers requested an interview with Garrett for the vacant role, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The 54-year-old coach was one of the multiple names to reportedly receive an interview request from Los Angeles on Monday. The reported list, shown below, also includes Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, the offseason's hottest head coaching candidate:
Coach | Role | Current team |
---|---|---|
Jason Garrett | Offensive coordinator | Giants |
Eric Bieniemy | Offensive coordinator | Chiefs |
Brian Daboll | Offensive coordinator | Bills |
Joe Brady | Offensive coordinator | Panthers |
Arthur Smith | Offensive coordinator | Titans |
Brandon Staley | Defensive coordinator | Rams |
Matt Eberflus | Defensive coordinator | Colts |
Garrett coached the Dallas Cowboys for 10 seasons from 2010-19, posting an 85-67 record in that time. The 54-year-old was dismissed at the end of the 2019 campaign and named the Giants offensive coordinator days later.
Garrett was heavily criticized for his results with Dallas - the club only made the playoffs three times with him at the helm - but he helped develop quarterback Dak Prescott, who was named Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2016 and has been to two Pro Bowls.
The Giants scored 17.5 points per game and gained less than 300 yards per contest during the 2020 regular season, ranking 31st in the NFL for both categories.
Meanwhile, Bieniemy has been the Chiefs' offensive coordinator since 2018. The 51-year-old has received significant praise for his role in turning Kansas City's offense into a juggernaut and particularly his work with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The Chargers fired head coach Anthony Lynn on Monday after four seasons.
