Report: Broncos tabled multiple offers for Stafford; Lions wanted Lock

The Denver Broncos were engaged in trade talks for Matthew Stafford before the Detroit Lions shipped the quarterback to the Los Angeles Rams, sources told Mike Klis of 9News.

Denver submitted multiple offers for the veteran, and the Lions were interested in receiving Drew Lock in return, Klis adds. Broncos general manager George Paton was reportedly hesitant to part with his young core, and the club's offers paled in comparison to the Rams' proposal.

L.A. and Detroit reportedly struck a deal for Stafford on Saturday night, as the Rams parted with quarterback Jared Goff, two future first-round picks, and a third-rounder.

The Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and San Francisco 49ers were also interested in Stafford, according to NBC Sports' Peter King.

Paton, during his introductory press conference earlier in January, left open the possibility of replacing Lock, stating the franchise was in search of a franchise quarterback.

Lock's uneven performances this season have led to questions surrounding his future with the team. After winning four of his five starts as a rookie in 2019, the 24-year-old went 4-9 in 2020. He also tossed a league-leading 15 interceptions while completing just 57.3% of his passes in his second year.
