Bucs' Barrett eyeing long-term deal: 'Time for me to break the bank'
Shaquil Barrett has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but it doesn't sound like a deal will come cheap.
Barrett is looking for a lengthy deal as a free agent this offseason.
"I'm most definitely looking forward to getting a long-term deal done," Barrett said to Adam Schein on SiriusXM's "Mad Dog Sports Radio," according to NFL.com's Kevin Patra.
He added: "I feel like it's time for me to break the bank now, and I most definitely want to do that to be able to set my family up better and most definitely going to keep producing, so it's not like anything is going to fall off."
Barrett has recorded 27.5 sacks since joining the Bucs two seasons ago. He pitched in four sacks during the team's playoff run that culminated in a Super Bowl victory.
But the pass-rusher thinks his best is still to come.
"I still think I got a lot left in the tank. I'm still getting better, actually," he said.
Barrett won't be the only player the Bucs are focused on, as Lavonte David, Chris Godwin, and Leonard Fournette are also due to hit free agency.
The 28-year-old declared during the team's Super Bowl parade Wednesday that he's staying with the team and hopes the two sides can come to an agreement in the near future.
"I want to be here. I think we got a great team here, a great organization here. So we will definitely go on just to see how it works out and shakes up. But, I'm looking forward to trying to get something done here," Barrett said.
