49ers make Trent Williams highest-paid OL with 6-year, $138M deal
The San Francisco 49ers pulled out all the stops to keep Trent Williams.
The 49ers re-signed the left tackle to a six-year, $138.1-million deal with $55.1 million guaranteed, his agency announced Wednesday.
Williams' new contract makes him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history, and it includes a $30.1-million signing bonus too, according to ESPN's Dianna Russini.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears were also pursuing him, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Williams joined the 49ers after a trade with the Washington Football Team last offseason. The 32-year-old made 14 starts during his first campaign in San Francisco en route to his eighth Pro Bowl selection.
Williams has been a model of consistency after being selected with the fourth pick in the 2010 draft, starting 133 career games. He missed the 2019 season due to a dispute with Washington, but Williams has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of the last eight seasons when he played.
The 49ers aren't done on the free-agent front Wednesday, as they're expected to sign center Alex Mack too, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Mack is familiar with San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan, previously playing under him during stints with the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons. The six-time Pro Bowler has made 179 career starts over 12 seasons.
