Titans 4th-rounder Weaver charged with assault
New Tennessee Titans linebacker Rashad Weaver, whom the team drafted in the fourth round last week, has been charged with simple assault, according to a court docket from the Pittsburgh Police department obtained by Emily Proud of WKRN News.
The report was filed on April 30, one day before the Titans selected Weaver, Proud adds. The rookie's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 5.
Police say Weaver punched a pregnant woman after an argument on April 18, according to KDKA-TV. The woman told police she suffered a concussion.
Weaver's attorney, Dennis M. Blackwell, released a statement denying the allegations against his client.
"The allegations against my client, Rashad Weaver, are completely false and reckless," the statement read, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. "Mr. Weaver takes these charges very seriously, and we look forward to clearing his good name. Without question and without hesitation, we deny Rashad punched anyone, especially a woman. We intend to conduct a full investigation of these charges, and intend to pursue all legal remedies available to Rashad."
The Titans selected Weaver 135th overall this year. The 23-year-old spent four seasons at Pittsburgh before entering the draft.
