Brees: Herbert's 'physical tools are as good as anybody I’ve ever seen'
Justin Herbert earned a glowing endorsement from Drew Brees during Wednesday's practice.
Brees, who retired this past offseason, visited the Los Angeles Chargers as part of his new gig as an analyst for NBC Sports and spoke highly of Herbert during his stay.
"I’ve actually been really impressed with him," Brees said, according to Gilbert Manzano of the Los Angeles Daily News. "There’s no doubt his physical tools are as good as anybody I’ve ever seen. By all accounts, he’s a great worker, he’s got great leadership qualities, he’s got a lot of intangibles, so I think the sky is the limit for him."
Wednesday wasn't the first time the former New Orleans Saints signal-caller got a look at the young star - the two clashed in a Week 5 contest last season. Brees escaped with a narrow 30-27 victory but it was Herbert who impressed, throwing four touchdowns against no interceptions.
Herbert will be working with new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi this season. Lombardi spent 10 seasons as Brees' quarterbacks coach during his tenure with the New Orleans Saints.
Herbert added the retired quarterback offered him advice during his stay and said he will talk to him throughout the season.
"He's a guy that I'm going to reach out to continuously to keep checking on and see if there's anything that I can learn from him," Herbert said, according to team reporter Chris Hayre.
The second-year quarterback is looking to build off a 2020 campaign that saw him earn Offensive Rookie of the Year after setting a new NFL rookie record with 31 passing touchdowns.
