McVay: 'Zero chance' Stafford ever plays in preseason for Rams
Don't expect Matthew Stafford's first official snap for the Los Angeles Rams to come before Week 1 of the regular season.
"There is zero chance you will ever see Matthew Stafford take a snap in the preseason for the Rams as long as I'm the coach. That will never happen," head coach Sean McVay said on "The Doug Gottlieb Show."
He added: "Until you tell me that if a guy gets hurt in the preseason that we'll get those games back or they'll add them on the schedule afterwards as, 'Oh yeah, you get two games because you lost those guys in the preseason,' it's hard for me to make sense of it."
McVay has a long history of being cautious with his top starters. The Rams have already decided to hold running back Darrell Henderson out of preseason action after losing Cam Akers to a season-ending injury.
The Rams dodged one injury scare with Stafford in training camp after the signal-caller hit his thumb on a player's helmet. However, it was reportedly determined to be a minor ailment after X-rays came back negative.
Los Angeles opens the preseason on Aug. 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
