The New York Jets are exploring ways to trade for a pass-rusher after losing Carl Lawson to a season-ending Achilles tear, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Lawson was enjoying a dominant training camp with the Jets before tearing his Achilles in practice Thursday.

The 26-year-old signed a three-year, $45-million contract with New York this offseason and was expected to significantly improve the club's defense. The former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman recorded 5.5 sacks last campaign but registered 32 quarterback hits.

The Jets notched 31 sacks in 2020, tied for 20th in the league, with Quinnen Williams leading the club with 7.5 sacks. However, Williams was the only player on the team to eclipse four sacks.

New York made a big push this offseason to improve after finishing 2-14 last year. The club drafted quarterback Zach Wilson in addition to signing Lawson and wide receiver Corey Davis in free agency.
