Report: Dolphins emerge as front-runners for Watson trade
The Miami Dolphins have emerged as front-runners in trade discussions with the Houston Texans for quarterback Deshaun Watson, sources told Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.
The Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Philadelphia Eagles reportedly also discussed a deal with Houston, but Watson's right to approve a potential trade destination has affected negotiations.
A team that dropped out of trade talks for Watson says the Texans are seeking three first-round picks and two second-round selections for the signal-caller, Robinson adds.
Watson is currently facing 22 lawsuits alleging sexual assault and inappropriate behavior. Ten women have also filed criminal complaints against him. Eight of the complainants are among those suing the quarterback.
The NFL recently cleared Watson to participate in training camp but said it's still investigating the allegations. The FBI has also conducted an interview with Watson regarding allegations that one of the women suing him attempted to extort him.
Teams interested in Watson have angled for pick protections during trade talks in order to alleviate a potential suspension or criminal prosecution for the signal-caller, Robinson adds.
Watson requested a trade from the Texans during the offseason and hasn't appeared in any preseason games this year. The 25-year-old has been present at practice, but Houston is limiting his participation.
The three-time Pro Bowler led the NFL with 4,823 passing yards last season while also setting career highs in completion percentage (70.2) and touchdown passes (33).
The Dolphins drafted quarterback Tua Tagovailoa fifth overall last year. Tagovailoa posted a 6-3 record as a rookie but lacked consistency. The former Alabama star completed 64.1% of his passes for 1,814 yards and 11 touchdowns against five interceptions in 2020. Three of his picks came against the Buffalo Bills in a Week 17 game that could've clinched a playoff berth had Miami won.
Watson inked a four-year, $156-million extension last September that contains a no-trade clause.
