49ers' Lance out a week with finger injury
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has a small "chip" in his finger and is expected to miss about a week, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Lance looked to be holding his thumb after his throwing hand hit a helmet during Sunday's preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, according to NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco. Shanahan reportedly said Lance sustained a small fracture but wouldn't reveal which finger was injured.
"It wasn't bothering him much because he just thought it was jammed on that helmet," Shanahan said Monday, according to David Bonilla of 49ers Web Zone. "And then when you get all the images on it, it's a micro-chip of a bone that's off. He chipped it, which is a small-chip fracture, which is worse than a jam."
He added: "He can't take snaps and do all that stuff right now, so we've just got to rest it for seven days ... Hopefully, he'll be good next Monday when we get into practice."
Lance, selected third overall in this year's draft, is currently competing for the starting role with veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Although Shanahan has yet to pick his Week 1 starter, he recently said he has a good idea of who will win the position battle.
San Francisco opens its 2021 campaign when it visits the Detroit Lions on Sept. 12.
The 49ers have experienced injury issues at quarterback recently, with Garoppolo missing 10 games last year. The 29-year-old has missed 23 contests due to injury since 2018.
