49ers' Lance could miss time with knee sprain
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance suffered a knee sprain Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals and will likely miss one-to-two weeks, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
The injury won't keep the rookie passer sidelined long term, and with the 49ers on a bye in Week 6, the timetable could make Lance questionable for the team's next game against the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 24.
Lance, who played the entire contest against the Cardinals, said he doesn't know when the injury occurred, according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows.
The third overall pick in this year's draft started his first NFL game Sunday as Jimmy Garoppolo's replacement. Garoppolo suffered a calf injury in Week 4 and wasn't able to face Arizona.
Lance finished his first start with 192 passing yards and one interception on 15-of-29 passing while adding 89 yards on 16 rushing attempts.
Garoppolo's injury isn't as serious as San Francisco initially thought, so he'll likely be available to return soon. The veteran signal-caller completed 66.1% of his passes for 925 yards and five touchdowns against two interceptions through the first four games of the season before being sidelined.
Shanahan said Sunday that Garoppolo would return to the starting role once he's healthy.
