Nagy assuming he'll finish season as Bears coach

Matt Nagy doesn't appear to be going anywhere just yet.

The Chicago Bears head coach said Monday that he's operating under the assumption he'll coach the final two games of the season, according to Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune.

Concerns over Nagy's job security have followed him for most of the campaign and have been amplified by the NFL's new hiring rule. Clubs are now allowed to interview candidates over the final two weeks of the season if the coach has been fired or has been informed they won't be retained.

However, dismissing Nagy before the end of the year would be an unprecedented move for a Bears franchise that's never fired a coach during the season.

Nagy's stock has dropped significantly since he was named NFL Coach of the Year during his debut campaign in 2018. He posted 8-8 records in each of his last two seasons and has the Bears at 5-10 this campaign.

The 43-year-old has been criticized for his handling of the quarterback position this season - specifically the development of rookie Justin Fields.

The Bears have started three different passers in 2021, including Nick Foles, who led them to a dramatic win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in place of the injured Fields.

Chicago is 33-30 under Nagy in the regular season, with an 0-2 postseason record.
