Report: Chiefs' Mathieu to hit free-agent market
Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu is set to test the open market, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
There is still a chance Mathieu returns to the Chiefs, but the team also has other priorities to attend to, Rapoport adds. The star safety is expected to be a coveted player once he officially becomes a free agent later this month, Rapoport notes.
Kansas City has approximately $11.5 million in cap space this offseason, according to Spotrac. The Chiefs are also reportedly working on a contract extension with three-time All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill that will likely make him one of the league's highest-paid wideouts.
Mathieu has started 47 games over the past three campaigns in Kansas City, recording 13 interceptions, including a career-high six in 2020.
The 29-year-old made the Pro Bowl last season after grabbing three picks and one defensive touchdown.
