Vikings signing Cousins to 1-year extension worth reported $35M
The Minnesota Vikings are signing quarterback Kirk Cousins to a one-year extension to keep him under contract through the 2023 season, his agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Cousins' new deal is worth a fully guaranteed $35 million, according to Schefter. The agreement reportedly includes voidable years, which will help lower his 2022 cap number from $41.66 million to $31.25 million, creating some much-needed flexibility for the Vikings.
Cousins, who has spent the last four years in Minnesota, entered the offseason facing a somewhat uncertain future with his contract ending following the 2022 campaign. A one-year extension doesn't put that issue to rest for long, but it quashes any speculation about who would be under center for the Vikings this year.
The 33-year-old started all but one contest last season, throwing for 4,221 yards, 33 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions.
Minnesota is 33-29-1 in the 63 games Cousins has started since he signed with the club as a free agent in 2018. He played the first six campaigns of his career in Washington.
