Andy Reid: Something is wrong if Mahomes doesn't win MVP
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Sunday that Patrick Mahomes' performance in a 30-24 overtime victory over the Houston Texans proves why the superstar quarterback deserves to win the MVP award.
"He took care of business. ... You're talking about a guy that, if he's not the MVP of the league, I'm not sure what's wrong with it," Reid said postgame, according to Harold R. Kuntz of FOX4 News.
Reid continued: "He cleaned it up and we had almost 500 yards of offense, minus 100 (yards) of penalties, but that was a pretty spectacular day there."
Mahomes completed 36 of 41 pass attempts - including 20 straight to end the game - for 336 yards and two touchdowns versus Houston to go along with 33 yards and one score on the ground. Kansas City improved to 11-3 and clinched its seventh consecutive AFC West title.
The former MVP's 87.8% completion rate in Week 15 is the highest in NFL history in a game with 40-plus pass attempts.
Mahomes now leads the league with 4,496 passing yards and 35 touchdowns. The 27-year-old, who's tossed 11 interceptions, also has two rushing scores.
"I think he's shown that he's the best quarterback in the National Football League," Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said Sunday, according to Arrowhead Report's Jordan Foote.
With three weeks left in the regular season, the MVP race is likely down to Mahomes and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts threw two interceptions in Sunday's win over the Chicago Bears but also put up three rushing touchdowns. He's thrown for 3,472 yards and 22 touchdowns to five picks in 2022 while helping Philly post a 13-1 record. Hurts has also racked up 747 yards and 12 scores on the ground.
