Jets' Wilson takes home Offensive Rookie of the Year
New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson captured Offensive Rookie of the Year at the NFL Honors on Thursday night.
Wilson, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, and Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker were this year's finalists. The Ohio State product is the second consecutive receiver to win the award after Ja'Marr Chase took home the honor last year.
Wilson edged Walker 156 points to 129, despite Walker receiving one more first-place vote than Wilson. Wilson's 19 second-place votes to Walker's eight were enough to win the award. Purdy finished third.
The 22-year-old Wilson totaled 1,103 yards and four touchdowns on 83 receptions this season. He had his best game in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins when he caught eight of 15 targets for 162 yards.
Wilson's production came despite New York's instability at the quarterback position. Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco, and Mike White all started multiple games.
Meanwhile, Purdy was forced into the starting lineup after Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered serious injuries. The Iowa State product threw for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns, and four interceptions in nine appearances this year.
Walker ran for 1,050 yards and nine scores after being selected with the 41st overall pick out of Michigan State. He also had 165 receiving yards on 27 receptions. Walker didn't fumble despite handling the ball 255 times.
The Jets are the first team since the 2017 New Orleans Saints (Alvin Kamara and Marshon Lattimore) to have a tandem win OROY and DROY in the same season. Wilson's teammate Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner took home the top defensive rookie award.
