Report: Bucs signing Baker Mayfield
Baker Mayfield is headed to Tampa Bay.
The Buccaneers are signing the former No. 1 overall pick to a one-year deal worth $8.5 million, reports NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Tampa Bay has been looking for a new starting quarterback this offseason to replace Tom Brady, who retired in February. The team also rosters 2021 second-round passer Kyle Trask.
Mayfield, 27, spent time with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams last season. He began the campaign on the Panthers but was released in December after posting a 57.8% completion rate with six touchdowns and six interceptions in only seven appearances.
The Oklahoma product then appeared in five games with the Rams, passing for 850 yards and four touchdowns against two picks while completing 63.6% of his passes.
Mayfield entered the NFL in 2018 and spent his first four seasons in the league with the Cleveland Browns. The signal-caller helped Cleveland clinch its first playoff berth since 2002 during the 2020 campaign and guided the team to the divisional round that season. However, he wasn't able to replicate that success in the following year, leading to a tumultuous exit from the Browns.
Mayfield was limited to only 3,010 yards and 17 touchdowns over 14 appearances while playing through multiple injuries in 2021, his final season in Cleveland. He requested a trade after the Browns acquired quarterback Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans in the 2022 offseason.
Carolina landed Mayfield in July 2022 in exchange for a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick.
