Packers' LaFleur: Love-led offense will be 'work in progress'

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur is looking forward to working with Jordan Love as the team's new starting quarterback, but he admitted the offense will be a "work in progress," according to USA Today's Tyler Dragon.

Love is expected to get his first crack at the full-time starting job once the Packers finalize a trade to send franchise icon Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. LaFleur stressed caution for the transition to Love, who has started just one game since being drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

"We all have to kind of temper our expectations for him," LaFleur told reporters, including Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, on Tuesday.

"I think we're fooling ourselves if we think he's going to go out and perform to a level of the likes of Aaron Rodgers," LaFleur added, according to Ryan Wood of USA Today. "(Rodgers) is a generational, once-in-a-lifetime talent, and I don't think he started in that role. It was a progression."

LaFleur declined to discuss Rodgers extensively but said he has "nothing but love and appreciation" for what the 39-year-old has done for the franchise, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Rodgers and LaFleur led Green Bay to two NFC title games during their four years together but failed to reach the Super Bowl, which LaFleur called "disappointing." Rodgers also collected two MVP awards playing in the coach's offense.

Rodgers said earlier this offseason he intends to play for the Jets in 2023 after claiming he learned the Packers were trying to move on from him after 18 years together.
