Report: Saquon won't sign tender ahead of offseason workouts
The New York Giants will start their offseason program without running back Saquon Barkley and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.
Barkley won't sign his franchise tender before the Giants' workouts begin Monday, making him ineligible to participate, according to Newsday's Kim Jones.
Lawrence won't report to the start of the Giants' offseason program due to his contract situation, sources tell Pat Leonard of The Daily News.
The 25-year-old Lawrence was named second-team All-Pro in 2022, finishing the season with 68 tackles and 7.5 sacks. He is set to play next year on the fifth-year option, which is slated at $12.4 million.
The Giants placed the franchise tag on Barkley in March after he returned to form last season, totaling 1,650 scrimmage yards and 10 scores.
The deadline for the two sides to agree to a long-term extension is July 17. Otherwise, Barkley will have to play on the one-year tag that's worth just over $10 million or sit out the 2023 campaign.
Barkley was one of the NFL's most dynamic playmakers as a rookie in 2018, but injuries impeded his production in 2020 and 2021. The former No. 2 pick has 4,249 rushing yards, 1,820 receiving yards, and 37 total touchdowns in 60 career games.
