Giants' Waller: Hamstring injury not a long-term concern
New York Giants tight end Darren Waller doesn't envision his right hamstring injury, which popped up late last week and made him questionable for Week 1, continuing to be an issue.
“No, not really," Waller said when ESPN's Jordan Raanan asked if it was a long-term concern.
Waller did play in the Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and added that he plans to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
The former Pro Bowl tight end missed eight games last season due to a right hamstring ailment. He said that this time around, it's a different type of injury to the same area.
"It more so has to do with the nerve that was behind it," Waller explained Monday, according to Pat Leonard of The Daily News. "So, it's not really a muscular issue. It was more so a little bit something different, like nerve-wise."
Waller added Thursday that the two injuries are very different in terms of severity.
"Last year, there was legit times where I couldn't run because my hamstring is pulled," Waller said, per Raanan. "But I can run at practice (Thursday), run routes and do it for two hours, so I'm like, 'I feel great.'"
The Giants acquired Waller in an offseason trade with the Las Vegas Raiders in hopes that he would become a marquee target for Daniel Jones. He caught three passes for 36 yards on five targets in the regular-season opener.
