Prescott laments 'humbling' loss to 49ers: 'Didn't see it coming'

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said he was caught off guard by his team's performance in Sunday's 42-10 prime-time loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

"I didn't see it coming. ... This might be the most humbling game I've ever been a part of," Prescott said postgame, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic.

The game was one of the most anticipated of the 2023 NFL season so far. However, the 49ers dominated from start to finish, outgaining the Cowboys in total yards (421-197) and first downs (25-8). The NFC West club also forced four turnovers, including three Prescott interceptions.

Prescott finished the night with 14 completions on 24 pass attempts with 153 yards and one touchdown. Both teams pulled most of their starters for the majority of the fourth quarter.

Cowboys head coach Mike Carthy also expected more from Dallas.

"It's a punch in the gut. It's a kick in the ass," McCarthy said. "I'm not a burn-the-tape guy. I think that's a crock of shit. ... I didn't see this coming."

He added, "I didn't do a good job tonight. It clearly just shows where we are as a team. We're 3-2. ... We got a lot of work to do."

Before allowing 42 points to the now 5-0 49ers, the Cowboys had given up only 41 points over their first four games combined this season. Dallas visits the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6.
