Jets have players-only meeting after loss to Raiders
The New York Jets held a players-only meeting on Tuesday following their 16-12 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday Night Football.
"The guys talked, and we had the floor," wide receiver Garrett Wilson said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "It was just us. We got to make sure we're all on the same page about where we're at and how the hell we get out of this funk, man. That was really the message. When it comes from one of your teammates, it always hits different. It always resonates a little bit more."
The 4-5 Jets, who rank 30th in points scored per game this season, have suffered two straight losses in which the team didn't score a single touchdown. New York has had almost as many penalties (17) as points (18) during its losing streak, notes Cimini.
The team is also dead last in third-down conversion percentage this season, having converted only 30 of 120 attempts on third down.
"We don't want to finish the season and look back like we should've done this earlier ... so let's talk about it now," Wilson added. "Hopefully, it leads to results, but the reality of us doing that and doing the right thing as far as calling a players-only meeting and talking, it doesn't guarantee anything. We still have to go out and do it."
Jets coach Robert Saleh recently backed quarterback Zach Wilson and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Saleh said he doesn't plan to bench Wilson or take the club's play-calling duties off Hackett.
Aaron Rodgers, who went down in Week 1 with an Achilles injury in his Jets debut, also showed support for Hackett. The four-time NFL MVP played multiple seasons in Hackett's offense on the Green Bay Packers.
"I won MVP twice in the same offense, so I'm a believer. I'm a believer in the offense," Rodgers said on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday.
He added: "It's easy right now to throw it at the usual suspects, Zach and Nathaniel, but there's a lot of positions that need to play better."
The Jets sent a surprising message to their struggling offense Tuesday by releasing third-year running back Michael Carter only two seasons after he led the team in rushing as a rookie.
