Report: Steelers' Johnson, Fitzpatrick involved in heated argument
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick got into a heated dispute in the locker room following last Sunday's loss to the Cleveland Browns, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Defensive veterans Cameron Heyward and T.J. Watt broke up the argument and told the team it needed to remain united, Schefter adds.
Johnson visibly showed his frustration throughout last Sunday's contest. However, he started "chirping" the Steelers' coaches postgame as they went into the locker room, a source told ESPN. Johnson's antics reportedly drew Fitzpatrick's attention and led to the argument.
Johnson was also caught having an animated discussion with head coach Mike Tomlin on the sideline during the loss. The 27-year-old said earlier this week that he was a "little bit" frustrated last Sunday but that it's "nothing to make a big deal of," according to Joe Rutter of Trib Live.
Tomlin joined Watt and Heyward in talking to the team following the argument, per Schefter.
Johnson was targeted eight times in the 13-10 loss but recorded only two catches as he and quarterback Kenny Pickett struggled to get on the same page.
Sunday's issues on offense culminated in Pittsburgh firing offensive coordinator Matt Canada earlier this week. Canada's offense had been outgained by opponents in each of the team's 10 games while it was held to one touchdown or less in half of its matchups this season.
The Steelers (6-4) will attempt to steer their offense in the right direction Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals (5-5). Running backs coach Eddie Faulkner is serving as the interim offensive coordinator while quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan will be tasked with play calling.
