Tomlin: Watt is 'best defensive player on the planet right now'
Mike Tomlin believes the NFL's best defensive player is none other than Pittsburgh Steelers star pass-rusher T.J. Watt.
"Let's be honest," Tomlin said Tuesday. "T.J. is the best defensive player on the planet right now. He proves that week in and week out with the plays that he delivers us."
"I get a bird's-eye view of it. I see the lengths that people go through to minimize his impact on the game," Tomlin added. "I know the type of games that we've been in, close ball games, and how that at times minimizes a guy that plays his position's ability to impact the game. None of those things slow down the train that we all know is coming. We're just appreciative of it."
A former Defensive Player of the Year winner, Watt is off to another terrific start in 2023. He's tied with Minnesota Vikings pass-rusher Danielle Hunter for the league lead in sacks (13.5), though Watt has also added one interception, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and a defensive touchdown.
The five-time Pro Bowler's efforts have been instrumental in getting Pittsburgh to a 7-4 record. The Steelers' defense ranks fifth in points allowed and has held its opponents to 20 or fewer points in seven straight games.
