Mahomes among Chiefs starters to sit vs. Chargers
The Kansas City Chiefs will rest quarterback Patrick Mahomes and other starters for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Wednesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Chiefs head into the final game before they playoffs already locked into the conference's No. 3 seed.
With Mahomes out, Blaine Gabbert will begin the contest under center. Reid did not mention who else will sit.
Gabbert hasn't started a game since the 2018 campaign when he was a member of the Tennessee Titans. The former top-ten pick has thrown 51 touchdowns to 49 interceptions over his career.
Mahomes' 2023 regular season effort comes to a close with the signal-caller totaling 4,183 yards, 27 touchdowns, and a career-high 14 interceptions.
The Chiefs won their eighth straight AFC West title in 2023, but they've struggled in the second half of the campaign. Since starting 7-2, Kansas City went 3-4 to enter the final week with a 10-6 mark.
