Report: Texans rework Diggs' deal to let WR hit FA in 2025
The Houston Texans made a significant change to Stefon Diggs' contract as part of the recent trade for the star receiver from the Buffalo Bills.
Houston wiped out the final three years on Diggs' contract, which gives him the ability to hit free agency in 2025, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Texans also reportedly moved $3.5 million guaranteed that Diggs had in his contract beyond 2024 and moved it up into this season. The veteran wideout will now earn $22.5 million in guaranteed money this year.
By giving Diggs the ability to cash in during the 2025 offseason as a free agent, the AFC South club expects to have the best version of the four-time Pro Bowler on the field in 2024, notes Schefter.
The Texans acquired Diggs, as well as a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round selection, in exchange for a 2025 second-round choice (via the Minnesota Vikings).
Diggs had signed a four-year, $104-million extension with the Bills in April 2022. Buffalo will eat a non-quarterback record dead cap hit of $31.1 million this year.
Diggs, who joined the Bills in 2020 in a trade from the Vikings, topped 100 catches and 1,000 yards in each of his seasons in Buffalo while catching 37 touchdowns across 66 regular-season appearances. His 445 receptions rank first in the NFL over the last four campaigns.
After drafting their quarterback of the future in C.J. Stroud last year, the Texans have been aggressive this offseason. In addition to Diggs, Houston also acquired running back Joe Mixon and signed pass-rusher Danielle Hunter, among other moves.
