San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey will miss a couple weeks of practice and is unlikely to play in the preseason due to a calf strain, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday.

The injury is not considered a long-term issue, Shanahan said.

Backup running back Elijah Mitchell is dealing with a hamstring strain and will be out "a week or so," Shanahan added. The 49ers signed veteran running back Matt Breida on Monday to add depth.

McCaffrey, 28, is coming off a monster year where he racked up a league-leading 2,023 total yards and 21 touchdowns. He secured Offensive Player of the Year honors and has shined in San Francisco since the club acquired him before the 2022 trade deadline.

The Stanford product has 6,185 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns in 91 career games since being drafted eighth overall by the Carolina Panthers in 2017.
