The Pittsburgh Steelers are keeping one of their defensive leaders in the fold for the foreseeable future.

Defensive lineman Cameron Heyward signed a three-year extension Tuesday, the team confirmed. The new deal is worth $45 million and includes $16 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Heyward, 35, was entering a contract year and had $16 million remaining on his current deal, Fowler adds. The new agreement is believed to be the largest of its kind for a defensive player over the age of 35.

"There are certain guys who are one-helmet guys. I want to be one of those one-helmet guys," Heyward said in a statement.

The Ohio State product is a longtime pillar of the Steelers' defense. He's preparing for his 14th season with the franchise and has served as a team captain for ten consecutive years.

Heyward skipped several OTA practices this past offseason for the first time in his career amid negotiations. He ultimately returned for several practices and reported to both minicamp and training camp.

The 6-foot-5, 295-pound defender was limited to 11 games last season due to a groin injury. Heyward, an eight-time Pro Bowler, has recorded 80.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, and two interceptions over his illustrious career.
